Winter Runs for Spring Success

I’m becoming a winter runner. A hard core Canadian runner! And its feels great.

A -10 C morning is a great time for a 10 K. An above seasonal February long weekend calls for a 22k training run. Marching through the snow as I train has become “fun”.

I cant believe that I am mentally at this point when it comes to running. It feels fantastic! hamiltonmarathon1.jpg

Training for the Hamilton Marathon & successfully completing it in 2016, changed the way I look at running.

I trained my body to run for a long time & discovered that thinking about the long run was most times more stressful then actually completing the damn thing!

Your mental game needs to be your strongest muscle when it comes to distance. Once you have built that, you can conquer it all!

Because of all I learned during the marathon process, 2017 is off to a great start.

So far I have completed 5 weeks of long distance training and am registered for 3 amazing runs!


First up, a race I’ll do with my running bestie, Jaclyn Whittal! Around the Bay 30k. It seems scarier than a full marathon, I don’t know why. The hills? The time of year? I don’t know! I’m getting really excited for this one.

Next up is a race I do every year! The Mississauga half-marathon. It’s in my hometown and the event is always organized to perfection. It’s an incredible spring race and last year I had the best time. The whole family came out and my twin brother (who is the most fit and athletic person I know) ran with me! Jonny has never been a runner, but I think my addiction has sparked some interest. Fun fact, I am two minutes older than Jonathan and thats exactly how we finished the race last year- I crossed the finish line exactly two minutes before him. It was such a memorable moment for me when it comes to running! And side note – glad he didn’t beat me, I train forever and this guy just comes in and almost out runs me. Ha! He’s just that good. Cant wait for this year! He’s going to join me again.

And then its time of marathon number 2! With Canada 150 happening this year I could not pass up the opportunity to be in Ottawa for Canada’s largest marathon. 

I am nervous about taking on the 42.2 km again, but I know I’ve done it before and I can do it again. I am trying to stress less about the distance and just have fun. I want to enjoy the training. I cant wait to be exploring the national capital while doing something extraordinary.

This will be a little scary! Run a marathon one weekend and then the following jump into a half ! I have always wanted to run the Barrie half marathon, I have tons of family in Barrie and the route looks great. So I am super happy to be registered this year! Also – it can be tough to find races in June, so this is a great option.
